On International Women’s Day 2019, the Women in Leadership Network — a BAAA chapter led by Chair Tashi Dema — hosted a fundraiser in Thimphu that raised BTN 68,295 to support the education of 15–20 disadvantaged girls from remote Zhemgang district, many of them orphans.
The event brought together BAAA members, alumni, government officials, and supporters from across Bhutan. Guest of Honour Dasho Kezang Deki — herself an Australia Awards alumna — officially launched the Network’s Facebook page and made the highest individual contribution of the evening.
Chair Tashi Dema said: “We believe that when women are educated and empowered, entire communities benefit. These girls from Zhemgang deserve the same opportunities as anyone else in Bhutan.”
The funds were directed toward school fees, supplies, and mentorship support, connecting the girls with BAAA alumni mentors who could guide them through their educational journey.
